“Từ bỏ” một từ khá quen thuộc khi chúng ta muốn kết thúc một việc mà mình đã cố gắng mãi chẳng thể hoàn thành được, “từ bỏ” trong Tiếng Anh là “give up”. 1. Give up: bỏ cuộc
Give up sẽ là một động từ chính trong câu mang nghĩa bỏ cuộc nếu câu có cấu trúc sau:
Subject + give up + Object
Or
Subject + give up, clause
Ví dụ:
- I give up - tell me the answer!
- No, you're wrong - do you give up?
- I haven't a clue - I give up.
- They gave up without a fight.
- She doesn't give up easily.
- If I wish to complete the project on time, I have to give up tennis.

2. Give somebody up: Từ bỏ ai đó/ người nào đó
Cấu trúc:
Subject + give somebody up + clause
Ví dụ:
- There you are at last! We'd given you up.
- We hadn't heard from him for so long, we'd given him up for dead.

- He gave up his seat to a pregnant woman.
- She seems to have given up all her old friends.
- He gave up his job in the city to become a plumber.
- They both gave up their jobs to go travelling.
- We're going to give up our sports club membership after this year.
- Ladies and gentlemen, will you give it up for Danny Jones.
3. Give yourself/somebody up (to somebody): Dùng để nói bản thân ai đó đã từ bỏ cái gì
- The gunman gave himself up to the police.
- After a week on the run he gave himself up to the police.

4. Give something up / up something : Ngừng làm gì đó - sở hữu cái gì đó
Cấu trúc:
Subject + Give something up + Object / Clause
Or
Subject + give up something + Object / Clause
Or
Subject + something up+ Verb-ing + Object / Clause
Ví dụ:
- We had to give our passports up to the authorities.
- He gave up jogging after his heart attack.
- Although behind in the chess match, he refused to give up.
- I've given up trying to help him.

- He used to try to get her to dress smartly but he's long since given up on her.

5. Give up on sb/sth: Dùng để chỉ một ai đó/ điều gì đó đã thất bại rồi.
Cấu trúc:
Subject + Give up on sb/sth + Clause
Ví dụ:
- Most people gave up on him when he dropped out, but he went back and earned his degree two years later.
